Stockholm is proud of it’s Kolmarden Zoo which is situated some 150 kilometres south-west of the city. But this year it is expected to be even more popular as last weekend the first gorilla ever born in Scandinavia was born in Kolmarden. According to the specialists, only a handful of gorillas are born in captivity each year, and especially when it comes to the Northern countries. The newborn’s mother, gorilla Naomi came to Kolmarden from the Hannover Zoo and her daughter is likely to cause lots of interest among the visitors. For example, the zoo expected more than half a million visitors this season compared to 470 000 in 2005. A special contest will also be held by a local newspaper to name the gorilla.
